Business Planning With Garrangali Band

Recently Fieldworx completed a three year business plan for GARRANGALI BAND, an emerging Indigenous ‘saltwater reggae’  band who just released their first CD.

This unique project brought together Fieldworx project officer Leanne de Souza with the band and their manager on the Laynhapuy Homelands in the beautiful community of Yillpara in North East Arnhem Land, Northern Territory.

With 18 years working in the music industry as a music manager and well known for assisting many bands with planning workshops Leanne was the thrilled to bring together this experience supported by the skill and expertise of Fieldworx’s approach, planning processes and resources.

Leanne says “the intersection of art and culture with business is always interesting. Working with a twelve piece reggae roots act between the ages of 17 – 30 in the Yolgnu language was inspiring”.

Two days facilitating the workshops on the band’s country was a profound experience, personally and professionally for her.  Leanne commented “flying in to the community gave a real sense of place connecting culture with the planning work ahead.”

Flying in to the Yilpara community at Blue Mud  Bay where the planning workshops were held for two days in July 2010.

The entire band was engaged and very interested in learning how the music industry works and what they can do to reach their goals and overcome the challenges of being based in remote Australia.

As Mudinymudiny says when asked how far he wants to take the sound of Garrangali, “We want to share our stories and culture with everyone.”

The Garrangali Business Plan provides the road map: building the foundations, vision, goals and strategies to achieve this.

We wish them all the very best with their career journey ahead!

Garrangali recently won a number of Indigenous Music Awards and Fieldworx congratulates everyone involved!

For a sense of the land, sea and culture of Blue Mud Bay and Garrangali be sure to listen to the music!
